The number of Ugandan designers set to showcase at the international stage in 2016 is steadily growing. Josephine Nakafeero is one of them and she is set to represent +256 at the Mercedes Benz African Fashion Festival in Accra-Ghana. The event will feature many designers on the continent and beyond including Oheneba (Ghana), Kenya Smith (New York) and Azhar (Lebanon) among others.
MBAFF will take place from the 1ST to 3RD July 2016 with the grand finale scheduled for 3RD July at
the World Trade center in Accra. To get herself ready, Josephine Nakafeero, known for her fashion show on NBS TV, Omusono, launched her clothing line recently at Cayenne Lounge in Bukoto. Jose House of Creations (JHC) was launched at an event she dubbed Fashion Forward. This came after close to a decade of designing for private clients and showcasing in other countries including Ghana and Nigeria.
Although she designs for both men and women, the launching collection was strictly for women, partly inspired by West African fashion. Her African wear collection incorporated different colourful African fabrics, but what stood out were the high-low and asymmetrical designs.
For the evening wear, she chose cotton, velvet and stretchy materials for the gowns. The collection also had something for the plus-size woman, often neglected by some designers.
She said it’s about time more designers embraced the plus- size trend, citing beautiful, curvy women such as Kim Kardashian or Ugandan singers Winnie Nwagi or Desire Luzinda, whose sense of style and body shapes are trending.
