Paris-based fashion designer Stella Atal’s showcase will headline the 7th edition of the annual Ugandan Diaspora gala to be held at the Kampala Serena Hotel on Saturday 30th Dec 2017. The event brings together Ugandans who live and work abroad by celebrating their contributions overseas and also encouraging them to give of their time, talents, ideas and expertise whilst inspiring the next generation of Ugandan leaders.
Atal has been on the fashion scene for over 10 years and her wearable art collections have been showcased on both Ugandan and international runways. Stella is currently based in Paris where she runs her art and fashion business registered under the Chamber of Arts and Creativity. The registration provides her with an opportunity of manufacturing and selling of her branded clothes and copyrighted art pieces as well as teaching fashion privately and at institutions.
This year alone, she showcased at over 10 runways internationally including shows in Paris, Prague, Kitenge Festival in the UK, UNAA Convention in Las Vegas and a show in Amsterdam among many others.
Living in a fashion capital such as Paris, Stella would like to use the opportunity to help the fashion industry in Uganda develop to the international level and connect its young designers to the international fashion communities as well as working with different fashion institutions in Uganda to ensure that fashion students get the best out of their courses.
Her dream is to see Uganda’s fashion scale the heights and get continental recognition and beyond therefore stepping out of the shadows of South African and West African designers.
Atal, a professional painter and interior designer will also put together an art installation before the main fashion showcase. It will on the sidelines of a contemporary art exhibition by Stephen Gwotcho.
Kenneth Mugabi, Irene Ntale, Dr Hilderman and Triplets Ghetto Kids will also entertain the guests.
