Aamito shares modeling success secrets

It was a full house at The Square all day Sunday as models, photographers, makeup artists and journalists among other creative people attended the model master class hosted by New York based model Aamito Stacey Lagum. The panel of speakers included photographer/model scout Shane Suban, makeup artist Tatiana Donaldson, fashion designer Anita Beryl and actress Cleopatra Koheirwe among others. The event according to Joram Muzira, was about giving Ugandan creatives especially in the fashion industry a hands-on experience on what happens in the fast paced fashion world. There was no better way than getting a Ugandan model living her dream in New York plus a photographer and makeup artist who have worked with renowned brands like Calvin Klein and Michael Kors among others. Aamito shared her story of how at 16 she knew she wanted to become a model and set out to get training from Arapapa. While her mother was not sure of where it would all end up, she continued to support and pray for her. “I used to pray and cover myself with the blood of Jesus, then go walk at a fashion show in a club and leave immediately it was done,” she said addressing the issue of balancing her dream and strong Christian background. She called upon the models that want to be at the top of their game to be persistent, consistent, curve into the standards of the industry, to have a good attitude and to be hungry for success always with patience as the only factors that will see them through. “Most importantly,” she said, “don’t let your dream die.” Aamito’s fortunes changed when she won the first cycle of Africa’s Next Top Model in 2013. She then got signed DNA Model Management in New York. She has since worked with top names in the fashion industry like Marc Jacobs, Lacoste, Paul Smith and Hermès among others in both runway and editorial works including the April 2017 cover of American Allure Magazine and also cover girl for August Elle UK Magazine. Participants were also taken through movement, photography and makeup practical.
