The fourth edition of the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice awards (AMVCAs) will take place this evening in Lagos, Nigeria. Eko Conference Centre will host the event.
The multi-talented, fan-favourite IK Osakioduwa alongside South African DJ, actress, MC and TV personality, Minenhle ‘Minnie’ Dlamini, will host these African Oscars.
The films produced and broadcast or publically exhibited between October 1, 2014 and September 30, 2015 are in the run for accolades in the 26 categories. Uganda is represented Joseph Kenneth Ssebaggala, whose films House Arrest and Call 112 have
been nominated in three categories.
Both films are vying for an award in the Best East African film category while House Arrest is in the Best Lighting Design and the biggest award of the night – Best Overall Movie (Africa).
The overall category is also being eyed by the likes of Tell Me Something Sweet (Akin Omotoso), (Adam Abel and Garret Betty) and Road To Yesterday (Chinny Onugbenu, Genevieve Nnaji and Chichi Nwoko), among others. Ssebaggala believes he will walk away with at least an accolade or two since he has two films in the East African category.
“It has to be God’s will. We did our part. We have also sensitized people about voting,” he said before heading to Nigeria.
House Arrest has won several awards and been screened at different festivals around the world. At the Uganda Film Festival gala night, it won the Sound, Feature Film, Best Actress and, the biggest one of the night, ‒ the Film of the year award.
“It feels good to be recognized at such a high level. The nomination in the Best East African film category places me in a good position with some of the top film producers from the region,” he said about flying Uganda’s flag at one of the most important nights in the continent’s film and TV world.
This is the biggest red carpet event akin to the The Oscars. All the African film stars will rock the red carpet in their best outfits. More updates will be coming on this blog live from the red carpet.
The awards will be broadcast live on Saturday evening on Maisha Magic East (channel 58) and all Africa Magic channels. The red carpet action starts 6pm (EA Time) while the awards ceremony starts 8:30pm.
