Fashion lovers for continental ASFAs 2016

When Brian Ahumuza aka Abryanz launched an event to award people who love fashion and look good by how they dress, his primary target was men. The year was 2013 and the first edition of the Men’s Fashion Explosion Style and Fashion Awards took place at Lugogo MTN arena. It was a success and also a revelation that it could get even bigger.

The organizer also realized women were the most enthusiastic; so, not only did the he decide to include women’s categories, the awards’ name also had to follow suit. The event was renamed Abryanz Style and Fashion Awards (ASFAs). He chose the name as a personal challenge to make the awards the biggest since his name was attached to it.

“I always want to compete against myself. I always want to break my own record,” he says. He realized there were no style and fashion awards on the continent and the dream to go continental was born. The 2015 edition was a major turning point for the ASFAs. He refers to it as the breakthrough edition that took the ASFAs beyond Uganda’s borders.

As today’s fourth edition goes underway at Kampala Serena hotel, over 10 African countries will be represented officially. The buzz will spread to the rest of the continent. Fashion enthusiasts in Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Angola, Kenya, Tanzania, Kenya, Rwanda, Malawi and Namibia among others will be talking about the event and following their representative’s participation on the red carpet, runway and the actual awards.

David Tlale from South Africa will be the headline fashion designer, while Nigeria’s Runtown will lead the performers. Tanzania’s Big Brother hot shots winner Idris Sultan will host the awards ceremony alongside Star Gist host (Africa Magic) Miss Vimbai. Zimbabwe’s Tinashe Venge will host the red carpet alongside Kenya’s Nick Mutuma. The list of foreign guests is endless.

“This is a continental show based in Uganda. My dream and vision is beyond the borders. It is about celebrating African fashion,” he says, explaining the diverse selection of acts for the event.

On the local scene, Maurice Kirya, Bebe Cool, Iryn Namubiru, Radio & Weasal and Allan Toniks, among others will provide the musical entertainment while Anita Beryl, Olivia Nanfuka, Abryanz Collection will showcase. This year’s theme is ‘Dress To Inspire’. Guests are expected to put their best foot forward. BET A-List plus local and continental media channels will be capturing the action, with some live coverage. Ciroc Uganda and Fenon Entertainment are some of this year’s partners. Tickets cost Shs 100,000 and Shs 5 million for the tables. Action kicks off at 6pm.
