On 12 December 2013, the men’s fashion explosion style and fashion awards took place at Lugogo Indoor Stadium now MTN Arena. It was attended by a number of fashion enthusiasts while the general public looked at the event as being all about rewarding the clients of Abryanz Collection a fashion store housed at Prime Complex and Garden City owned by Brian Ahumuza, the brain behind the awards. Ahumuza then put the event together by himself and the flyer had only had Fenon Events and Urban TV as partners with ticket buyers being the biggest supporters of the event. Fast-forward to 2017 and five editions later, the event now called Abryanz Style and Fashion Awards (ASFAs) has made its mark, becoming a staple on the social calendar while gaining continental and global recognition. The fifth edition that took place on last week at Kampala Serena had guests from South African, Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania and the hosts Uganda. It received media personalities and coverage from the mentioned countries and beyond. Leading the pack of sponsors this year was Ciroc who have been at it for three years now. The sponsor’s list also boasts of big names like Bell Lager, South African Airways and Pemba Sports Africa among others.
In a statement, Ahumuza said the awards had accomplished its main goal of bringing together Africans from all walks of life in one place with the purpose of celebrating Africa’s outstanding fashion. “The ASFAs made five years in existence this year with a groundbreaking milestone by being the only fashion event in the country to sell out,” he said. The consistence of the brand has not only attracted big name sponsors but it also created jobs for Ugandans especially those in the beauty industry. The fashion designers for example have more that just wedding high season to look out for. Now the weddings are competing with the awards in terms of orders coming in especially from the womenfolk. In late October, Fatumah Asha, one of the most trending fashion designers made it official that she could no longer take orders for 2017. The only exception to the rule was the ASFAs and indeed on the awards night a number of people turned up dressed in her creations for the red carpet. Also cashing in were the likes of Glitz By Nalu, Hairby Zziwa and makeup artists. South Africa’s king of fashion, David Tlale produced the show in addition to showcasing. Nigeria’s Mai Atafo also showcased and was honoured with the Style Icon Award. UK-based Ugandan Alecool, Tanzania’s Sheria Ngowi , Sheeba Kassami Pemba and Monica Kansiime also showcased. Mafikizolo had everyone dancing to their timeless hits while new kids o the block Latinum and Fik Fameika used the platform to further announce their arrival. Other winners of the night included Bebe Cool ( Most Stylish Male Artiste) and Ras Kasozi (fashion designer of the year). See full list of winners here
