The 10th edition of the Bayimba International Festival of the Arts is upon us. Action gets underway on Friday afternoon till Sunday at The National Theatre. Music may take the lion’s share but the event is not limited to only music. The festival also celebrates dance, film, poetry and fashion. This year, fashion designers Kkoolo, Gloria Wavamunno and Ras Kasozi have been lined up to showcase on Friday, Saturday and Sunday respectively starting at 5pm.
Bayimba International Festival of the Arts has always had a slot for fashion at its event held
annually at the National theatre.
But 2016 proved to be a game changer in more than one ways; fashion earned its place and could henceforth have specific showgoers like those that come for action on the main stage. The space behind the theater usually saved for silent disco was well utilized during last year’s and going forward, it could turn into the fashion space at the festival.
A fashion blogger that attended the 2015 edition’s fashion showcase described it as boring and did not return. Organisers clearly took notes and improved things if the success of the 2016 is to go by.
According to the festival’s publicist, Philip Masembe, many art forms appear sophisticated and less appreciated because they lack platforms to showcase them. That is why Bayimba uses music to create awareness for the less-appreciated arts disciplines.
Look out for the fashion showcases this. We may also get a sneak peek at Gloria Wavamunno and Ras Kasozi have in store for Kampala Fashion Week happening the following weekend.
