More and more men are embracing the trend that involves showing off their legs. It is nolonger a preserve for the ladies. I was at Blankets and Wine recently and I must admit, gone are the days when men were shy about showing off how their legs appear outside the trousers. See, we have the comfort of spending more time in pants fully covered. Some men save the short stuff for the beach although you will still find a couple of them wearing full-length pants or opting for a sporty look with track suits. Modern fashion forward men are going all out. They are not wearing that big quarter shorts that stop between the ankle and knees. No. They are wearing short shorts. Runways towards end of 2015 into 2016 have been awash with shorts. Designers like Gucci, Topman among others are going way above the knees for this.
Until recently, conventional wisdom told us that something just above the knee is the desirable measurement. Much lower than that and you resemble a late 1980s or early1990s sports man. Remember how short the jerseys were back then? No? Google has the images. The rise of the shorts is rooted in the prevailing trends of retro sport-inspired fashion and men being braver about showing a little bit of skin.
What is even more eye catching is the choice of colours. It is not time to play safe so do
not be surprised to see red, pink, orange or any other light hues that we would otherwise leave for the women. It is another example of how blurry the line between women’s and men’s clothing is getting. If the sponsor Tusker Malt lager was to give a prize for best dressed revelers, the men in the shorts would give the girls a run for their money.
It has been easy to show off the toned chest and arms but now it is time to show the results of your ‘leg day’ in gym by letting the world ogle at your “thighceps.” Until people start sniggering behind your backs, that is. But they will be fine as long as you have nailed the look. For starters, you need to pick the right fabric. A hundred per cent cotton is a sure win. It could be brown, red, blue, green or any other colour you fancy. When you need to step out of the comfort zone, you may have to think about prints. Now you have to watch these closely otherwise you could pick an African print that may make you look like you borrowed an outfit from your sister’s wardrobe but with the lines between men’s and women’s clothing getting increasingly thinner, we can ignore that too.
Loafers and shorts are a good combination although some people maybe tempted to wear open shoes. There is also another shoe commonly known as Sebago. It comes in a variety of colours that can give this look the wow effect. Go on and show some leg.
