Nigerian fashion designer Amaka Osakwe of Maki Oh will be closing the 2017th edition of Lagos Fashion Week. You may be wondering why she is a big deal. Well, her star-studded list of clientele includes Michelle Obama, Lupita Nyong’o, Solange, Issa Rae, Beyonce, Rihanna, and

Kerry Washington among others. She has been named by African fashion magazine ARISE, as Designer Of The Year. She has also been profiled by Forbes Africa as one of the 15 Young African Creatives Rebranding Africa. In October 2014, she was invited to the White House thus becoming the first African Designer to be invited to the White House. The New Yorker has named her “West Africa’s Most Daring Designer.” Her list of achievements is endless. Maki Oh gained international recognition when it entered for New York Fashion Week in 2012. Her Lagos based brand was two years old started after graduating from Arts University Bournemouth.

Osakwe’s esthetic blends traditional elements from her Nigerian culture with modern Western silhouettes, and her label, Maki Oh, has gained an impressive following in the U.S. and the U.K since it debut. Her brand is known for using the traditional textile art process known as Adire.

Other designers to look out for include; Tsemaye Binitie, Ejiro Amos Tafiri, Orange culture, House of Kaya and Mai Atafo among others.
