At the clock of 1:30am on a cold Saturday morning, Grace Nyakaana was crowned Miss Tourism Tooro beating other five contestants. The event took place at Mountains of The Moon hotel in Fort Portal. The third tourism ambassador for Tooro region since the cluster was launched was a clear favorite from the beginning. Her poise, confidence, knowledge of Tooro culture and the general knowledge of the tourism sector stood above the rest. She also won Miss Photogenic and Miss Social Media categories. Tooro may have a clear contender for the coveted Miss Tourism crown at the grand finale. Christine Kajumba and Gorret Peace Kobusinge were first and second runners up respectively. The top three will make it to the boot camp and compete with winners from other clusters like Karamoja, Rwenzori and West Nile among others.
Crowd favourite Shamim Kabahenda was crowned miss talent while Kobusinge also won the miss
culture category. Kigambo Araali was a worthy performer of the night given his long standing advocating for Tooro region and its culture through the years using his songs like Ekirale. Going forward, organisers should be critical on who they line up to perform at such a culturally charged event. Kudos should be given to the contestants for balancing English and Rutooro during their presentations and question approach. The area has a big number of expatriates who were present at the event so running the show is a local dialect would have excluded them from following proceedings.
Cluster head and minister of tourism Tooro Kingdom, Anne Bagaaya, said that now more than ever, the region’s beauty and tourism potential needs to be told and sold to the rest of the world. She called upon the crowned tourism ambassadors and general public to take it upon themselves to promote tourism under the new campaign dubbed Tooro Kokasemera.
